Long A Spellings

Use this song to practice Long A sounds. Remember all long vowels say their names. The most common spellings are: ai, a_e (a with silent e nearby) and ay. "Ea" also sounds like A sometimes, as in "great," though this is not common. Another less common long A spelling is "ey." You can note other A sounds in the song: an, al, ar (as in "star") and a(u)--this is an A that sounds like the U in "up." It's a reduced sound, usually on an unstressed syllable and used about 1/2 the time for the simple word "a" as in "a man." Notice that with the words broken for pitch changes, you can see syllables too.

Soon we are eating
a great meal
because it is
Sunday and all is good.
